General Guidelines for Citing

Citing in text:

  • Cite sources in numerical order using superscript numbers
  • Superscript numbers are placed after commas, periods, and quotation marks
  • Superscript numbers are placed before colons and semicolons

The reference list:

  • References are listed in the order they appear in your text
  • Standard numbering (no superscript)
  • Single-space and left justify
  • Author names are listed in the order they appear on the source
  • Journal names must be abbreviated and italicized
  • Do not omit digits from inclusive page numbers, e.g. 132-138 is correct
  • Elements on the reference list such as the city, state of publication or the publisher name may not be found; in this case it is OK to omit these elements.
