AMA Citation Style

General Guidelines for Citing

Citing in text:
  • Sources are cited in the text using superscript Arabic numerals.
  • Sources are numbered in the order they are used. 
  • Superscript numbers are placed after commas, periods, and quotation marks.
  • Superscript numbers are placed before colons and semicolons.

The reference list:

  • References are listed in the order they appear in your text. The number for each reference must match the corresponding in-text superscript citation.
  • The reference list uses standard numbering (no superscript).
  • Single-space and left justify
  • Author names are listed in the order they appear in the source.
  • Journal names must be abbreviated and italicized.

Normally with an electronic resource, the URL would be included in the citation. UpToDate suggests excluding the URL in the provided example.

Author(s) if available. Title of specific item cited (if unavailable, provide name of organization responsible for creation). Name of website. Publication date. Updated [date]. Accessed [date]. http://www.URL.url

Book:

Author AA, Author BB. Book Title: Subtitle. Edition number (omit this if it is the first edition). Publisher name; Copyright year.

Image (online):

Author(s) if available. Title of specific item cited (if the image has no title, create a description of the image to use as the title, e.g.: Photograph of a frog on a lilypad). Name of website. Publication date. Updated [date]. Accessed [date]. http://www.URL.url
